Worked as doctor at Beijing Children's Hospital, Senior Doctor of Beijing No.2 Hospital, 1957-1984; served as Deputy Head of Xicheng (Western) District, Beijing, 1984-1988.

Served as Vice-Mayor of Beijing, Vice-Chairman of RCCK Central Committee, Chairman of RCCK Beijing Municipal Committee,1988-1996.

Serving as Vice-Chairman of Eighth National Committee of Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) and Chairman of RCCK Central Committee since 1996.
